Online Databases

Online databases are purchased by the school to assist students with homework and research. 

 

 

 

Ebscohost Databases are a great information source for projects and general research provided by the NH State Library. The user name and password can be obtained by logging in here, then returning to the library page to view the passwords file.

1.       Searchasaurus – for grades K-4 includes a children’s encyclopedia, a wildlife encyclopedia, atlases, a dictionary, magazine articles, and a photo gallery.  Searchasaurus has an easy to use visual directory.

2.       Middle Search Plus – provides access to 140 magazines for middle school research plus a large selection of biographies and an image gallery of photos, maps, and flags.

3.       Ebsco Animals – a wildlife encyclopedia.

4.       Newspaper Source – news from more than 200 regional, national and international newspapers.

Country Reportsprovides a wide variety of information about countries around the world including government, social life, economics, food and customs.  Also includes a section on U.S. states with statistics, state symbols and interesting facts.  The user name and password can be obtained by logging in here, then returning to the library page to view the passwords file.

Tumblebooks - interactive picture books, as well as quizzes and activities related to these picture books.  Great reading site for preschool through 3rd graders.  The user name and password can be obtained by logging in here

Web Search Engines

Ask for Kids      Children can ask a question such as “Why is the sky blue?” and receive an answer with pictures and a basic explanation.

Gogooligans       A kid's search engine which searches for kid appropriate results with a simple Google-like search box, spell correct and accessibility features.  Uses SafeSearch technology to help block inappropriate results.  (Like all of website blockers, it will not remove all inappropriate results.)

KidsClick    A search directory where students can search by topic and keyword.  Kids Click was designed by librarians to guide kids toward informative, reliable websites.

  American Revolution    Information about the American Revolutionary War including battles, important people and a  timeline of major events.

 BAM!   A high kid appeal website about your body and mind from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, including information about diseases, health and fitness and nutrition as well as the human body.

Ben's Guide to U.S. Government   Information about the U.S. government including the branches of government, symbols, important historical documents, and games and activities.  Graded for a variety of ages from K through 12.

Between the Lions     Stories, songs, and games which encourage beginning readers.

Biography.com    Database of brief biographies for more than 25,000 famous people past and present.

Easy Bib       A free tool for creating citations and bibliographies for websites, articles, books, and other sources. 

Edheads Simple Machines   A series of activities to identify and explain the uses of simple machines that are an everyday part of our homes.

Enchanted Learning    Offers resources and activities on a wide variety of topics including science, geography, languages, and art.  Includes world language resources; state facts and symbols; information about animals of various biomes, a variety of science dictionaries and much more.  There is an extensive collection of printable activity books for all grades and subject areas from world languages to folktales to astronomy.

FactCheck       Not sure if a story you've heard is true?  FactCheck is a website developed by the Annenberg Public Policy Center to give the truth behind that news story or rumor.

FactMonster     A visual directory of information with an atlas of the world, historical timelines, and sections on a wide variety of topics such as biomes, lives of kids around the world, sports, and idioms and proverbs.  A special section on the homepage includes daily news, a daily word quiz, analogy, and information about this day in history.

Food Reference  Information about food, food history and types of food.

FreeRice
Quiz yourself on vocabulary, geography, math or a foreign language and earn rice to help feed the world's poor.  How many grains of rice can you earn?

InfoPlease      Includes an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, thesaurus and more. 

Internet Public Library Kid Space      A directory of websites for elementary school students by subject, including reading, math and science activities as well as informational websites.

Internet Public Library TeenSpace   A directory of websites for middle/high school students by subject including math, science, literacy, health and career oriented information

Intuit Homework Help Sites A wide variety of websites for reading, math, science nd social studies arranged by subject area (Thanks to Ms. McKnight's class in Delaware for this suggestion!)

Native Americans for Children      Information about Native American tribes by region.

Learn about Native Americans    Interactive learning about Native Americans of different regions with lots of great photos.

Native American Facts for Kids      Listing of Native American tribes with information about each tribe including words from individual languages and pronunciation.

NH Almanac    Information about famous people, flora and fauna, and important facts about New Hampshire.

The Physics Classroom Offers a physics tutorial including information about the nature of waves, Newton’s laws, momentum and conservation, with quizzes to help students check their understanding.

Radar's Chemistry for Kids  Good basic information on many science topics in easy to understand language.

Sheppard Software     Free online quizzes in math, geography, space science, social studies and more.

Social Studies for Kids   Information about U.S. and World History, including the American Revolution, Ancient History, geography and culture.

Worldbook Online is a great, easy-to-use resource which can be accessed from home or school.  It includes an online encyclopedia, atlas and dictionary geared to studentsin Grades 3 and up.  Worldbook Kids is geared to students in younger grades.
